Treatments for Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be an embarrassing problem for many. Dr. Kwan helps people with hyperhidrosis deal with excessive sweating using several methods that are quite successful.

Antiperspirants

The first method used to treat many cases of hyperhidrosis is by using an antiperspirant. Dr. Kwan can recommend an extra strength antiperspirant that should reduce the amount of sweat that you experience. Most of these antiperspirants contain aluminum salts that plug your sweat glands and block sweat under your arms and elsewhere on your body. If recommended store-bought antiperspirants don’t work for you, our medical staff might prescribe one for you. Many antiperspirants also include deodorants. Deodorants don’t work well to reduce sweat, but they do prevent body odor from sweat.

Anticholinergic Drugs

Anticholinergic drugs may be prescribed to reduce excessive sweating. These drugs are taken orally and prevent activation of the sweat glands. They work well but do have some side effects such as heart palpitations, urinary issues, and blurred vision.

Botulism toxin A (Botox)

Botox is one of the most popular treatments for excessive sweating. Botox injections work to treat excessive underarm sweating and may also be used for the hands and soles of the feet, too. Botulism toxin A prevents the activation of the sweat glands by producing a unique chemical in the body. Injections can last for up to a year.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments offer a more permanent solution to excessive sweating. During laser treatments, laser energy heats and destroys the sweat glands, preventing them from producing sweat. At the same time, hair growth can also be reduced. After optimal treatment sessions, hyperhidrosis can be eliminated for long-lasting results.
