Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that develop mainly on the legs. Spider veins are smaller, red-, purple-, or blue-colored vessels that twist and turn like spider webs, hence their name. They are easily visible through the skin and typically appear on the legs and face. There are a number of things that cause varicose and spider veins to develop. Both conditions are caused by damaged or weak valves in the veins. Heredity is a contributing factor, as is standing on your feet for long periods. People with certain occupations, such as nurses, hair stylists, and teachers are prone to varicose and spider veins. Obesity is also a contributor, as well as hormonal changes, such as hormone replacement therapy.

There are several different treatments available to remove or diminish both varicose and spider veins. Some treatments are more effective than others, so it is important to seek the advice of a board-certified dermatologist before you choose a treatment. There are lifestyle changes you can make to reduce the chances of varicose or spider veins appearing, such as losing weight or reducing the amount of time spent on your feet. For those who wish to diminish or resolve existing varicose or spider veins, laser treatments, radio frequency treatments, surgical techniques, and IPL (intense pulsed light) therapies all work very well. If you want to rid yourself of varicose and/or spider veins, please contact Kwan Dermatology to schedule an appointment with one of our medically trained team members.
