If you’re considering getting HA (hyaluronic acid) fillers like Juvederm or Restylane for the first time, it’s normal to be hesitant about what to expect. The truth is, fillers are widely popular because they can produce instantly rejuvenating results with very few side effects or downtime. Here’s what to know about filler treatment and how Dr. Kwan can help you achieve a new level of confidence.

1. Minor Redness and Swelling

Since hyaluronic acid fillers work by plumping your skin with an injection, it makes sense that you’ll have some tenderness and redness at the site afterward. This typically subsides within a day but can last longer for treatments like lip fillers because of their sensitive anatomy. If the redness and swelling are bothersome, you can use a protected ice pack for 15 minutes at a time and take acetaminophen (avoid blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen).

2. Itchiness

Some people will have slight itchiness at the injection site, especially in sensitive areas like around the mouth or eyes. This typically subsides within a few days but make sure to let your dermatologist know if it persists or gets worse.

3. Tenderness or Sensitivity

You may have some mild tenderness in the area, especially if you opt for lip fillers. However, it usually subsides within 1-2 days and shouldn’t interfere with your normal activities or social events. Although it may be tempting to massage or rub the area to relieve pain, it’s best to avoid it until the filler is fully settled.

4. Bruising

Bruising shouldn’t be a concern if you avoid blood-thinning medications like ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) at least two weeks before your injection. It’s important to also avoid it two weeks after your appointment, as well. If you must take pain-killing medication, try to take acetaminophen (Tylenol). If you do experience bruising, it typically subsides within 1-2 weeks.

5. Results

Although you’ll see some improvement right away with dermal fillers, it can take about two weeks for it to settle into its final appearance. Each filler product will last for a different amount of time (this can also depend on the treatment area), but fillers typically last for 6-12 months. Dr. Kwan will give you the best estimate of how long you can expect your results to last.
